'No' vote for supermarket plans
3 AugustProposals for a new supermarket in Dunoon were rejected by local residents in a recent consultation meeting vote.
More than 200 attended the Queen's Hall debate, organised by Dunoon Community Council to discuss proposals for a new store at the current Walkers Mica site on Sandbank Road.
Bruce Weir from developers CWP and project management consultant James Harbison
spoke on behalf the development, arguing that the build would usher in lower prices and greater choice for local consumers, as well as create over 200 new jobs.
Argyll Street shop owners Charles Black and Alan Livingston spoke against the plan, saying that it would weaken the local economy and mean the end of more jobs overall.
After a lively question and answer session, a vote found 77 in favour of the new development and 138 against, a result the Community Council intend to use as the basis of a formal objection to the plans.
