A Brief History of Dunoon
5 May, 2010Here are a few key dates from our past.
12th Century - Dunoon Castle is built.
1370 - Dunoon Castle becomes the seat of the Lord High Steward of Scotland.
c 1563 - Mary Queen of Scots stays at Dunoon Castle.
1685 - Dunoon Castle is destroyed during the Monmouth Rebellion.
1795 - A new planned village is laid out for the 5th Duke of Argyll by James Craig, designer of Edinburgh's New Town.
1820 - Dunoon Pier is built. It is replaced with the current one in 1895.
1820 - Castle Toward is built.
1894 - The first Cowal Games is held.
1961 - The US naval base is established at Holy Loch.
1992 - The US naval presence is withdrawn.
 2005 - The new breakwater and linkspan is completed.
2010 - s1dunoon.com is launched to give locals a place to discuss local issues, place small ads, air their opinions, advertise events and show off pictures and video.

That's the briefest of brief summaries, and hardly covers the most important dates. But this is where you come in. There's lots of interest in local history and lots of local knowledge out there - so why not share it here?
Perhaps you'd like to start a better, more complete time-line, or start your own article about your favourite aspect of the history of Dunoon? And there must also be a wealth of wonderful photographs of Dunoon in years gone by - maybe even some video of more recent events - and those are more than welcome here. Remember, history doesn't need to be in black and white! It's good to bring back memories of just a few years ago, too.
